..mute"

I am not sure who is running around my neighborhood with a big, fat Sharpie tagging everything standing still, but I really wish he or she would stop.

I am a fan of street art but not this tagging...it seems out of place here in Munich, at least in the streets nearest our building. The place I see that this tagging bothers me the most has to be on the walls of the Friedhof, or cemetery. It sure seems to me that the only names that should be honored or noticed there are the ones on the graves.

So, I say to you, ...mute", live up to your name and stay muted!
(or give us some real street art...)

Olympic Hopes

Take a look who was staring back at me when I rounded the corner in the Sendlinger Tor Ubahn station... none other than Mark Spitz.  He won 7 Gold Medals in Swimming here in Munich in the 1972 Summer Olympics.  This record would stand until 2008 when Michael Phelps won 8 Gold Medals for swimming in the Olympic Games in Beijing.

Munich is one of 3 cities to make a bid for the 2018 Winter Olympic Games, with the Bid Committee in Germany headed by Figure Skater Katarina Witt (also a gold medalist!).  The other Bid City Candidates are Annecy, France and Pyeongchang, South Korea.  The winning city will be announced on July 6th.

Garmisch-Partenkirchen, which is south of the city of Munich, will host the Skiing events.  There is a lot of hope for Munich to become the first city to hold both the Summer and Winter Olympic Games.  The Bid Committe has big name sponsors like Lufthansa backing it, and we have seen posters and props for the bid quest all over the city and the airport.  I don't know if we will be here in 2018, but it would be a fun time to be living here!  Stay tuned, I'll keep you posted on the announcement!

Sendlinger Tor

Okay, this picture would have been soooo much better if the dude on the bike hadn't snuck in, but alas, here it is...Sendlinger Tor is a large Gothic city gate. It is one of three gates that remain from the original secondary city gates, along with Karlstor and Isartor from 1285-1347. Tor in German means gate. This area is heavily pedestrian filled, as Sendlinger Strasse is a long street of shops (which coincidentally leads to Marienplatz) on which is nestled the Asamkirche. (Kirche is German for church) The church which is hiding on Sendlinger Strasse looks like a whole lotta nothin' until you go inside...(more on this church later... See? Now you have to come back!)
